What better way to start the week than announcing our Best of Spring ’13 photo contest winners? Congrats to, in order, Anna, Davis and Emily who had the winning photos, and to Julia, whose photo of hang gliding over the Alps was our office favorite.

Anna on her winning photo:

My photo was taken on the Great Ocean Road in Australia. The specific beach is Loch Ard Gorge. I studied abroad in New Zealand, but my program took me to Fiji and Australia too. It was a tough choice between studying in New Zealand or Australia, but ultimately I chose New Zealand, in part because the program included travel to Fiji and Australia. I have always had a love for geography and geology, so studying abroad and experiencing different landscapes and cultures was important to me. And going to these three places was exciting because I was able to experience three very different countries. It was a truly eye opening and an overall incredible experience.

Emily on her photo:

I chose this picture because I was amazed by the beauty of the French Alps. I took it while snow shoeing in Pierre Saint Chartreuse, which is about an hour outside of Grenoble. It was one of the first times I saw the countryside and it was absolutely breathtaking.

I had an incredible time studying abroad in Grenoble last fall. I was with an awesome group of students, in one of the best small towns France has to offer. I had an amazing host family that I still keep in touch with, and I was able to explore every corner of Grenoble.

And Davis on his photo:

Salzburg, after spending a semester there, is my home. Ever since returning to America, my mindset has been: where do I go from here that will get me back to Austria as soon as possible. By the time I left, Ingrid, our Resident Director, told me she didn’t think they had ever had anyone who had done as much as I had. That was almost entirely thanks to my Professor, Frau Marquet. She would tell me about a cultural or folk event happening, and I’d pack my bag and go. That being said, there is never a dull moment in Salzburg. And for brief moments you can escape and go back in time. After experiencing that on multiple occasions, I fell in love with the place, and waking up with the Alps, literally, in your backyard everyday, is not so bad either.
